Vulvodynia is a chronic vulvar pain. Vulvodynia is pronounced as (vul-vo-din-ee-a). Vulvodynia is a syndrome characterized by chronic vulvar discomfort, especially burning, stinging, irritation or rawness.

In study it is found that almost 20% of American women have suffered from chronic pain at some point in their lives. Vulvodynia is more common in white women.

What are the Characteristics or Symptom of Vulvodynia ?

Vulvodynia is characterized by itching, burning, stinging or stabbing in the area around the opening. Pain can be unprovoked, varying from constant to intermittent.

Vulvar pain usually has an acute onset. The onset can be associated with vaginitis (yeast, bacterial), or medical procedures on the vulva (cryotherapy, laser). In most cases, the vulvar pain then becomes a chronic problem varying in length from months to years. The intensity of the pain can vary from mild to disabling. It can be burning, stinging, irritating or raw.

Symptoms of vulvodynia may range from mildly irritating to completely disabling. While a distinct sore, or area of redness may be visible, often it shows no abnormalities or infections on gynecological or dermatological evaluation.

What are the causes of Essential Vulvodynia ?

The exact cause of Vulvodynia is not clear. The following factors may play a role in Vulvodynia causes:

• Chemical irritation of the external genitals by soap in clothing
• Rashes on the genital area
• Previous laser treatments or surgery on the external genitals
• Past or present genital warts
• Frequent yeast infections
• Frequent use of antibiotic medicines
• Nerve irritation or muscle spasms in the pelvic area

Women experiencing vulvodynia may have a history of recurrent yeast infections.
