Pruritis (Itch) - Pruritis Ani

A Pruritis is a medical term for itching. Pruritus is a cutaneous sensation sharing neural receptors and pathways with pain but is characterized by its own precipitants, potentiators, and range of severity.

What is Pruritis Ani?

Pruritis is a medical term for itching. Pruritis is defined as a sensation that provokes the desire to scratch. Itching can be a significant source of frustration and discomfort. When severe, it can lead to loss of sleep, anxiety, and depression.

What causes Pruritis Ani ?

The exact cause of an itch is unknown and is a complex process. Pruritus ani usually occurs in men. The reason is unknown. Some known causes of Pruritis Ani are as follows -

  • A common cause of pruritis ani is excessive cleaning of the anal area.
  • Moisture around the anus, from excessive sweating or moist stools is another possible cause.
  • Drinking certain beverages, including some alcoholic beverages - especially beer - milk, citrus fruit juices, and drinks containing caffeine may be aggravating from some people.
  • Similarly, some foods including chocolate, fruits, tomatoes, nuts and popcorn may be a problem.
  • Other rare causes of pruritis ani may include pinworms, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, hemorrhoids, anal fissures, anal infections, and allergies.

There are many skin diseases that have itching associated with a rash as a prominent symptom. Examples would be hives, chicken pox and eczema. Some skin conditions only have symptoms of pruritis without having an apparent rash. Dry skin, for example, is very common in the elderly, and can really itch (especially in the winter), with no visual signs of a rash. Pruritis is usually secondary to subtle dry skin, but it may be a manifestation of an internal condition. Some parasitic infestations of the skin, such as scabies and lice, may be very itchy.

Pruritis Ani Treatment

Avoiding further trauma to the affected area, changes in hygiene regimen, and avoiding excessive fluids and foods previously mentioned are the first steps in treating pruritis ani.  Medications may be prescribed for severe cases.

Natural Home remedies for pruritis

1. Sprinkle lime slice with rock salt. When dry, grind in a dry grinder and store. Take one fourth to half a teaspoonful once or twice a day.

2. For an itchy scalp, a regular weekly massage with warm olive oil, sunflower or sesame seed oil will take away the dryness.

3. If the itch is due to a dry skin, massage with fresh cream and then bath with a mild soap or soap nut solution and warm water.

Recovery from Pruritis

Most people experience some relief from itching within a week.  Complete cure usually comes within four to six weeks.
