Preventing Stretch Marks

With stretch marks, prevention is better than cure.

It is impossible to remove the stretch marks totally, although they may become less conspicuous with appropriate treatment over a period of time. The best treatment is preventive care.

What are Stretch Marks?

It is very common that almost every woman in a specific time of their lives will develop stretch marks. Stretch marks appear in form of the angry red lines on your bulging abdomen, usually during the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy. They look like reddish lines across the body, and with time they will turn white.

Sometimes, stretch marks can spread over a large expanse of skin, across the abdomen, on the breasts, thighs and upper arms.

Causes of stretch marks:

As the name suggests, these marks are caused by overstretching of the skin, destroying its elasticity and resilience. These marks develop when weight loss follows weight gain. That is why they are so common after pregnancy.

When the layer of skin is continuously stretched over a long period of time, the elasticity breaks down and the skin tries to remedy the problem by increasing the amount of collagen in the over stretched area. This is what then creates the scars in the dermis which show through to the epidermis (top layer of the skin).

Tips for preventing stretch marks:

The only way to avoid stretch marks is preventing them.

1) Massage: Use a body brush or cloth to massage the areas where you have stretch marks, or want to prevent stretch marks from appearing - this will increase circulation to the area, which may be helpful.

2) Massaging your body with olive oil or Vitamin E may help.

3) It is very important to exercise in order to get rid of stretch marks; toning your muscles helps your skin to firm thus preventing stretch marks.

4) Eating a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals that maintain healthy skin is thought to prevent stretch marks.

5) Drink plenty of water. Hydration is important for your overall health and well-being.

6) Avoid Hormone Based Medicines. It is suggested that certain hormone based medications such as steroids can cause stretch marks.

Guidelines to get rid of stretch marks:

The best treatment to get rid of stretch marks is a preventive care. So, as soon as you become pregnant, start a programme of daily massage of the abdomen and breasts. Use a turmeric-lemon pre-bath cream, massaging it into the skin. This helps to maintain the elasticity of the skin and provides protection.

If you are overweight and plan to go on a slimming programme, pay special attention to the problem of stretch marks by massaging those areas that are vulnerable.
