Reconstructive Plastic SurgeryReconstructive plastic surgery is done to aesthetically and functionally correct various problems to return a person to normalcy. Some may be congenital defects-you are born with them-like a cleft palate, a deviated septum or no chin. Also, a prominent, overextending jaw can be reset at a backward slant, not only to improve the appearance but to improve the bite as well. Other reconstructive surgeries are for people who have had traumas from accidents, many from car accidents. Another example of reconstructive surgery is neoplastic surgery which is done after the growth of cancers. People who have cancer of the salivary glands, of the jaw and, most commonly, of the skin, may need this type of surgery. For a woman who has had a mastectomy (done by a general surgeon), the next step, some six months down the road, may be having a plastic surgeon reconstruct a breast. There are several things a plastic surgeon can do. One is to use a breast implant for breast augmentation; another is to use excess abdominal tissue; and the third is to use a muscle from your back-the latissimus dorsi-which is brought around to the front to expand the chest. These are successful operations-a great breakthrough for women who have had cancer.
