Face-Lift Surgery

As we get older, our facial skin loses its elasticity, and, because of the pull of gravity, it stretches. Excess skin accumulates in the folds between the nose and the mouth (called the nasolabial folds), along the border of the jaw and in the neck. A face-lift will make you look as well rested and as refreshed as possible, but it won't get rid of all your wrinkles. You will still have lines on your cheeks, around the mouth and around the forehead (that's fine-you don't want a tight, expressionless face!).

A face-lift is major surgery, taking three to four hours to perform. In a face-lift, the surgeon may go through three steps-sculpting away the excess fat, suturing or tightening the neck and facial muscle system, and pulling and removing the excess skin. First, incisions are made in inconspicuous places (in the scalp, inside the ear and in the back of the ear), and the skin of the face is separated from the rest of the face, exposing the deeper structures. Fat is removed from the desired areas and the facial muscles are tightened and sutured. Then the skin is pulled and placed under tension. The surgeon must take care not to distort the patient's natural expression.
