What is Periorbital Cellulitis

Periorbital cellulitis is an infection of the soft tissues around the eye. It is also known as Preseptal cellulitis. Periorbital cellulitis is a serious eye condition that requires immediate treatment. If your child is complaining of eye pain and his upper and lower eyelids are red and swollen, call your doctor right away.

There are actually two different kinds of periorbital cellulitis, depending on exactly where the infected soft tissues are.

Periorbital cellulitis Cause

Periorbital cellulitis are usually caused by infection of the sinuses near the nose. Insect bites or injuries that break the skin cause about one-third of these cellulitis infections. Orbital and periorbital cellulitis may also occur in people with a history of dental infections. Periorbital cellulitis may be caused by any of the following:

Conjunctivitis
Chalazion, hordeolum
Allergic reaction
Local infection
Dacryocystitis

Periorbital cellulitis Symptom

There is generally redness and swelling of the eyelid and the surrounding area, but unlike orbital cellulitis (a more extensive infection involving deeper tissue), periorbital cellulitis does not cause protrusion of the eyeball (proptosis) or limit its movements. Periorbital cellulitishave no significant fever, no leucocytosis, and symptoms are localized to the lids and conjunctiva. Periorbital cellulitis is most common in children under six years of age.

Periorbital cellulitis Treatment

In the majority of cases, Periorbital cellulitis infection can be cured with oral antibiotics alone. However, in more severe infections, IV treatment in a hospital may be required. If periorbital cellulitis is the diagnosis, don't be too alarmed; this condition is easily treated on an outpatient basis.
