Paronychia Information - Causes, Symptom, Treatment of Paronychia
What is Paronychia ?
Paronychia is very common nail diorder. Paronychia infections of the nail fold can be caused by bacteria, fungi and some viruses. The proximal and lateral nail folds act as a barrier, or seal, between the nail plate and the surrounding tissue. Paronychia is a fairly common superficial infection of the skin around the nail. It usually results from injury to the area from biting off or picking a hangnail, or from manipulating, trimming, or pushing back the cuticle.
Acute Paronychia
Acute paronychia usually clears completely in a few days, and rarely recurs.
Acute paronychia develops over a few hours when a nail fold becomes painful, red and swollen. Sometimes yellow pus appears under the cuticle. In some cases acute paronychia is accompanied by fever and painful glands under the arms.
Chronic Paronychia
Chronic paronychia is due to several different micro-organisms. Often a mixture of yeasts and bacteria are present, particularly candida species and Gram negative bacilli. The inflammation results in debris which builds up, encouraging more infection.
What causes Paronychia ?
Some known causes of Paronychia are as follows -
curved toenails
poorly fitting shoes
toenails that are trimmed improperly
Abnormally shaped nail plate
Trauma to the nail plate or toe
