Onychomycosis - white subungual onychomycosis proximal, Onychomycosis treatment

What are Onychomycosis

Onychomycosis (tinea unguium) is a fungal infection of the nail bed, matrix or plate.Fungal infection of the nails is known as "onychomycosis". It is increasingly common with increased age. It rarely affects children. Onychomycosis accounts for one third of integumentary fungal infections and one half of all nail disease.

Distal subungual onychomycosis may develop in the toenails, fingernails or both.

White Subungua Onychomycosis Proximal Information

White subungual onychomycosis proximal is the least common form of tinea unguium in healthy persons. As the disease progresses, these patches coalesce to involve the entire nail plate. The nail becomes rough, soft and crumbly.

This form of onychomycosis usually occurs in mmunocompromised persons and is considered a clinical marker of human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Onychomycosis Cause

Here are the list of Onychomycosis Cause

  • Dermatophytes such as Trichophyton rubrum (The infection is also known as tinea unguium.
  • Sometimes trauma or damage to a nail predisposes to the development of onychomycosis.
  • Yeasts such as Candida albicans.
  • Moulds especially Scopulariopsis brevicaulis.

Onychomycosis Symptom

Here are the list of Onychomycosis Symptom

  • Small white patches
  • Round or oval
  • Lighter than surrounding skin (hypopigmented)
  • Flat (macular) or slightly elevated
  • Slight scaling with very small fine scales (may be present)

Onychomycosis Treatment

  • The oral form of ketoconazole (Nizoral) is much more effective but carries a risk of hepatotoxicity.
  • Onychomycosis has long been treated with topical antifungal preparations.
  • Treatment using nail avulsion in combination with topical therapy has been somewhat more successful.
  • Triazole and allylamine antifungal drugs have largely replaced griseofulvin and ketoconazole as first-line medications in the treatment of onychomycosis.
