Onycholysis Information - Causes, Sign & Symptom, Cure, Treatment of Onycholysis
What is Onycholysis ?
Onycholysis can be a sign of skin disease, an infection or the result of injury, but most cases are seen in women with long fingernails. In some rare cases of onycholysis the spontaneous nail plate separation can be confined to the nails lateral borders although it usually starts at the distal free margin and progressing proximally.Onycholysis is the gradually and painless separation of the nail plate from the nail bed and it can occur for various factors, being the most usual trauma, fungal nail infection or onychomycosis.
Although it may not be painful, it is important to have this treated as soon as possible, as the result could be losing the nail or a significant portion of it. Many medical issues, from fibromyalgia pain to rheumatoid arthritis, have painful warning signs and we prioritise these issues because of this pain. However, all medical issues, especially ones with pain-silent aspects like Onycholysis, need to be treated.
Causes of Onycholysis
Onycholysis condition is usually self limiting. Here are some causes of Infected Onycholysis:
fungal nail infection
hereditary and idiopathic factors
Contact irritants
trauma
moisture are the most common causes of onycholysis
Treatment of Onycholysis
Patients should avoid trauma to the affected nail, and keep the nail bed dry.
For nail abnormalities due to ingrown toenails, wear shoes that don't squeeze the toes together, and always cut the nails straight across along the top.
Avoid frequent exposure to harsh chemicals including nail polish remover, wear light cotton gloves under vinyl or rubber gloves for repetitive immersion of nails in water because they expand with moisture and then shrink while drying.
Patients should clip the affected portion of the nail, and keep the nails short.
