Niaouli

Botanical Name: Commiphora myrrha

Background/Origin: Myrrh is a member of the Burseraceae family and is native to Asia and North Africa. Myrrh is a gum resin which secretes naturally from the trunk, or when the bark is cut and is likened to frankincense. The Ancient Egyptians used Myrrh in their embalming process and also in rejuvenating facial masks.

How Niaouli is extracted: Steam Distilled

Description: Myrrh a small tree, rather like a bush, myrrh is native in Arabia, Somalia, Ethiopia and other North African countries. Although the leaves are aromatic it is the resin which is distilled to produce the viscous, yellow essential oil. It has a warm, lightly spicy, sweet smell.

Color: Golden Yellow/Brown

Property: Rejuvenating, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and expectorant.

Therapeutic Effects: Anit-inflammatory and expectorant, myrrh will ease bronchitis, catarrh, coughs and colds. Good too for digestive problems, infections of the mouth and throat, and skin conditions.

Uses of Niaouli essential oil: Inhalation and massage. It is used in pharmaceuticals and perfumery. In aromatherapy, because of its cooling effect, it blends well with camphor and lavender.
