Hair Loss After Pregnancy


Hair loss after pregnancy, or other stressful event is very common. it is called telogen effluvium. Hair loss that is connected to pregnancy usually occurs after delivery. During pregnancy, an increased number of hairs go into the resting phase, which is part of the normal hair loss cycle. This condition is not serious enough to cause bald spots or permanent hair loss, and should begin to diminish within 3-4 months after delivery. If you feel that you are experiencing unusual hair loss while you are pregnant, this may be due to a vitamin or mineral deficiency. Giving birth to a child often gives way to temporary hair loss because of hormonal changes in the woman's body.  There are very low levels of estrogen in a woman's body after childbirth, and a decreased level of estrogen is one major cause of hair loss. Pregnant women have a heightened level of progesterone and estrogen.  When these levels drop suddenly after delivery, this causes their hair to slip into the resting or telegen stage. Most commonly, hair loss after pregnancy occurs between three and six months after pregnancy.

After pregnancy, hair's growth cycle returns to normal. During pregnancy, the hair becomes fuller. That is because the follicles don't release hair at the same rate as when the body is not pregnant. So, hair loss during pregnancy is not very common, and hair will usually fall out less than when a woman is not pregnant. Besides hair loss after pregnancy, you may have noted other changes in your hair during pregnancy. Hormones affect the whole body, including the hair. Hair that was normally straight might suddenly begin to grow in curlier than ever during pregnancy. Or, hair that was curly may get straighter and straighter as a pregnancy progresses. It can take a year for hair to readjust to its normal thickness and straight or wavy state after the baby is born. During pregnancy, nails become notably harder. Just as there is a normal amount of hair loss after pregnancy, the fingernails will also return gradually to the way a woman had normally experienced them. Iron in particular is a powerful source of growth for hair, nails and skin. Try to eat foods that contain plenty of proteins such as fish, chicken and nuts.

This condition is normal and cannot really be prevented but it can be alleviated in a number of ways to make is less dramatic. To keep your hair and scalp in good condition, treat yourself to a soothing aromatherapy scalp massage once every few weeks. Simply add several drops of essential oils to a half-cup of warm vegetable oil. Essential oils considered safe to use during pregnancy include lavender, neroli, patchouli, sandalwood and ylang ylang. When a woman is worried about hair loss, particularly after pregnancy, it is wise to confer with her doctor to be certain her hormone levels have returned to normal when her pregnancy is completed. Luckily, because the hair loss during and after pregnancy is usually related to hormone imbalances the hair loss is very temporary. In fact, you may experience significant hair loss one trimester and then the next trimester your hair grows really fast and is suddenly very thick.

Causes of Hair loss after pregnancy

Common causes include:

  • A hormonal imbalance.
  • Discontinuation of birth control pills.
  • Abortion.
  • Miscarriage or stillbirth.

Tips to prevent Hair loss after pregnancy

  • Take vitamins containing B, C, E and zinc. 
  • Eat a diet with lots of fruits and vegetables rich with vitamins, antioxidants and flavenoids.
  • Avoid pigtails, cornrows, hair weaves, braids and tight hair rollers which can pull and stress your hair.
  • Get enough sleep and rest.
  • Use shampoos and conditioners that contain biotin and silica.
  • If you need to use blow dryers and other heated hair instruments, try to use the cool setting.
