What is Guttate Psoriasis?

Guttate Psoriasis is a form of psoriasis characterized by drop-like lesions on the trunk, limbs, and scalp. Symptoms may be triggered by viral respiratory infections or certain bacterial (streptococcal) infections. Guttate Psoriasis: Drop-like lesions appear on the trunk, limbs, and scalp. Guttate Psoriasis is not contagious. Sometimes guttate can flare throughout childhood, often due to repeated bouts of strep infection or other upper respiratory illnesses. Named for the Latin word gutta, which means "a drop," guttate psoriasis is characterized by small, red, drop-like dots that enlarge rapidly and may be somewhat scaly. Often found on the arms, legs, and trunk and sometimes in the scalp, guttate psoriasis can clear up without treatment or disappear and resurface in the form of plaque psoriasis.

What causes Guttate Psoriasis?

The exact cause of psoriasis is not known, but it tends to run in families. If both of their parents are affected, a person has a 60% chance of developing the condition.

Guttate Psoriasis appears to be related to the immune or inflammatory response. It often is aggravated by injury or irritation and may be severe in immunosuppressed people.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Guttate Psoriasis?

Various symptom of Guttate Psoriasis are as -

  • red
  • skin lesion (scaly macule)
  • usually covered with silvery scales
  • discrete, demarcated, teardrop-shaped patches of skin
  • usually located on the entire body
  • with patchy loss of skin color
  • itching


What are the treatments available for Guttate Psoriasis?

Treatment is focused on control of the symptoms and prevention of secondary infections. It varies with the extent and severity of the disorder. If an infection can be identified, it should be treated with appropriate antibiotics. Guttate Psoriasis is not contagious.

Severe or resistant cases, or cases involving large areas of the body, may require intensive treatment or hospitalization. Mild cases are usually treated at home.

Other treatments include exposure to sunlight or phototherapy. The skin is sensitized by applying coal tar ointment or by taking oral psoralens The person is then exposed to ultraviolet light.
