Granuloma Annulare : Symptom, granuloma annulare treatment

What are Granuloma Annulare

Granuloma annulare is a chronic degenerative skin disorder. Granuloma annulare can occur on any site of the body and is occasionally quite widespread. It only affects the skin and is considered harmless. Granuloma annulareappears most often over knuckles and other joints or in places that are subject to frequent, mild injury such as the back of the hands or top of the feet.

Granuloma annulare most often affects children and young adults. It is slightly more common in girls. The most common form is localized granuloma annulare, which is characterized by the presence of small, firm red or yellow colored bumps (nodules or papules) that appear arranged in a ring on the skin.

Granuloma Annulare Cause

  • Granuloma annulare is rarely associated with diabetes.
  • Granuloma annulare is most common in children and young adults, the reason is unknown.
  • Granuloma annulare is rarely associated with diabetes.

Granuloma Annulare Symptom

Granuloma annulare is usually asymptomatic, but the rash may be slightly itchy. In most cases, granuloma annulare causes no symptoms, or a just mild itch at the start of any new area.

  • a ring of small, firm bumps (papules) over the backs of the forearms, hands or feet

Granuloma Annulare Treatment

In most cases no treatment is required. If treatment is desired, it may be helpful to apply a prescription to the skin or medication can be injected into the bumps themselves.

  • A special form of ultraviolet light treatment known as PUVA has also been successful in some people with widespread granuloma annulare.
  • Troublesome patches may improve using steroid creams or ointments, or occasionally steroid injections into the rings, but this is not always the case and such treatment is not recommended in every individual, as there is some risk of thinning the skin.
  • However cosmetic creams or fake tans may help to conceal the affected patches helps in the treatment of Granuloma Annulare.

Cortisone injections can also be used to treat granuloma annulare. These are more effective than cortisone creams.

Is granuloma annulare hereditary?

No.
