What is Flexural Psoriasis?

Flexural Psoriasis is also called Inverse Psoriasis. Flexural Psoriasis is characterized by intense inflammation and little scaling. This type of psoriasis appears as smooth, dry areas of skin that are red and inflamed but do not have the scaling associated with plaque psoriasis. Inverse psoriasis is particularly subject to irritation from rubbing and sweating because of its location in skin folds and tender areas.

What are the causes Flexural Psoriasis?

Flexural Psoriasis is experienced most often and is most severe and frequent in overweight people because it is in the skin folds where it is particularly prone to irritation from rubbing and sweating. It is localized in the flexural surfaces of the skin, e.g., armpit, groin, under the breast, and other skin folds. Flexural psoriasis is a ggravated by sweat and friction.

Flexural psoriasis may occur in conjuction with -

typical plaque lesions elsewhere,
nail and scalp lesions only,

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Flexural Psoriasis?

Various sign and symptom of Flexural Psoriasis are as follows -

Smooth, vivid red, moist patches without a scaly surface
Sensitivity to friction and sweating
Pain and itchiness in the affected area

What are the treatments available for Flexural Psoriasis?

Treatment for Flexural/Inverse Psoriasis varies with the extent and severity of the disorder. Flexural Psoriasis responds quite well to medium potency topical steroids. Irritating compounds such as anthralin should be avoided. Tinea cruris and erythrasma should be ruled out.

For the treatment of Flexural Psoriasis Steroid creams and ointments are considered very effective, but they should not be occluded (covered) with plastic dressings. Because these areas are prone to fungal infections, physicians sometimes use diluted topical steroids in combination with other medications, such as 1% or 2% hydrocortisone with antiyeast or antifungal agents.

If flexural psoriasis is worsened by surface growth of yeast, a trial of oral ketoconazole may be of some value. People with severe flexural psoriasis may require systemic drugs such as methotrexate to control the condition.

Other treatments for Flexural or inverse Psoriasis include exposure to sunlight or phototherapy. The skin is sensitized by applying coal tar ointment or by taking oral psoralens The person is then exposed to ultraviolet light.
