Fennel Essential OilBotanical Name: Foeniculum vulgare Background/Origin: There are 2 types of Fennel, bitter and sweet, but only sweet fennel is used in aromatherapy. Fennel comes from the Umbelliferae family and grows wild in most parts of Europe. It has a sweet aniseed-like aroma and is often used as a flavouring. How Benzoin is extracted: Steam Distilled Description: These graceful perennial plants are found in Europe, often by the sea, and have delicate bright green feathery foliage. Their bright tufts of yellow flowers attract bees. As a herb, the freshleaves are particularly valued for fish dishes whereas the seeds, which smell like aniseed, are used in liquorice. The sweet oil, wich has a similar smell, is extracted from the crushed seeds. Color: Clear with a Faint Yellow Tinge Property: Diuretic, Carminative, antispasmodic, appetite stimulant (aperitif), emmenagogue, galactagogue. Uses of Fennel essential oil: Digestive problems, flatulence, constipation, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, cystitis, obesity, fluid retention, helps produce milk in breast feeding mothers, helps irregular periods, menopause, cellulite, gout and alcohol poisoning. Therapeutic Effects of using fennel: Noted as a diuretic, and a mild laxative, fennel has been found effective for colic, constipation, digestive problems, kidney stones, menopausal problems, nausea and obesity. It is also often helpful for increasing milk yeild during breast feeding. Safety & Precaution Instructions: Not to be used if pregnant, on young children or suffers of Epilepsy. Can cause skin irritation.
