Blepharitis

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids . It usually causes burning, itching and irritation of the lids.  The condition affects the skin of the eyelids, and it usually involves the part of the eyelid where the eyelashes grow (lid margins). Anterior blepharitis usually is subdivided further into staphylococcal and seborrheic variants. Blepharitis often is associated with systemic diseases, such as rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis, as well as ocular diseases, such as dry eye syndromes, chalazion, trichiasis, conjunctivitis, and keratitis. Repeated occurrences of styes or hordeolum (inflammation of the eyelid's sebaceous gland) and chalazia (swelling that results from a blockage of the meibomian glands) are also associated with blepharitis. The condition can return at any time and eyelids may occasionally become infected because of the inflammation , which may develop into styes (hordeolum) and pustules (pus filled spots). Posterior blepharitis affects the inner eyelid and is caused by problems with the oil (meibomian) glands in the eyelid. Blepharitis is usually a chronic problem that can be controlled with extra attention to lid hygiene. Colonization of the lid margin is increased in the presence of seborrheic dermatitis or meibomian gland dysfunction. Blepharitis is often a chronic condition that is difficult to treat. This is usually caused by a bacterial infection and can cause loss of eyelashes, eyelid scarring, and inflammation of the cornea.

Blepharitis is a common condition that causes inflammation of the eyelids and it can affect people of all ages. Anterior blepharitis refers to inflammation mainly centered around the eyelashes and follicles, while the posterior variant involves the meibomian gland orifices. It's a common disorder and may be associated with a low-grade bacterial infection or a generalized skin condition. When these oil glands malfunction, bacterial overgrowth can result, leading to inflamed, irritated and itchy eyelids. You may notice tired, or gritty eyes, which may be uncomfortable in sunlight or a smoky atmosphere. This results in direct microbial invasion of tissues, immune system-mediated damage, or damage caused by the production of bacterial toxins, waste products, and enzymes. Blepharitis does not usually affect vision or damage the eye. It is a chronic, manageable condition in most cases. If left untreated, it can lead to a more serious condition called ulcerative blepharitis . Although it's uncomfortable and may be unattractive, blepharitis doesn't cause permanent damage to eyesight.

Causes of Blepharitis

The common Causes of Blepharitis :

  • Herpes simplex dermatitis
  • Varicella-zoster dermatitis
  • Chronic blepharitis has been associated with exposure to chemical fumes, smoke, smog, and other irritants.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis - dandruff of the scalp and eyebrows
  • Malfunctioning oil glands in your eyelid
  • Posterior blepharitis affects the inner eyelid (the moist part that makes contact with the eye) and is caused by problems with the oil glands in this part of the eyelid.
  • Anterior blepharitis affects the outside front of the eyelid, where the eyelashes are attached.
  • You may have dry eyes (or at least poorly spreading tears) and replacement tears may help, as described.
  • Blepharitis is not serious; some people whose eyes remain sore have little medically wrong, and are in fact anxious and unduly concerned.
  • The eyelids appear red and irritated, with scales that cling to the base of the eyelashes.

Symptoms of Blepharitis

Some common Symptoms of Blepharitis :

  • seborrheic dermatitis on your child's head or face
  • general discomfort of the eyes
  • Red and/or swollen eyelids
  • Crusty, flaky skin on the eyelids
  • Flaking of the skin around the eyes
  • A gritty, burning sensation in the eye
  • A decrease in the production of tears,
  • Dry eyes,
  • Frothy tears,
  • Swollen
  • Burning

Treatment of Blepharitis

  • Massage the eyelids by gently rolling your first finger on the eyelids in a circular motion as this helps to push out any of the mucus-like fluid from the tiny eyelid glands.
  • Use a cotton bud to gently clean the edge of the lower lid to remove any crusts.
  • If you are using eye drops, gently squeeze the drops into the pocket you've created, not directly into the eye.
  • Replacing the tears if the eyes are dry with Lubricants (dry eyes and blepharitis may occur together: see below).
  • Treating any infection present with Antibiotic Cream antibiotic cream
  • Second, the eyelid margin is washed mechanically to remove adherent material, such as collarettes and crusting, and to clean the gland orifices.
  • your child's tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
  • Expectations for the course of the condition
  • Antibiotic ointments for the eyes - antibiotic ointment does not make the blepharitis clear faster, but it may help to stop the spread of the infection to other parts of the eyes, or treat a secondary infection.
  • Conjunctivitis and keratitis can result as a complication of blepharitis and require additional treatment besides eyelid margin therapy
