Essential Oils

An essential oil is a substance extracted from a single botanical source; the extract is 70 times more concentrated than what is originally found in plant form. Essential oils are the highly concentrated essences of aromatic plants. Aromatherapy is the art of using these oils to promote healing of the body and the mind.

Each of the essential oils used in Aromatherapy can be used either alone or in combinations to create a desired effect. Before using essential oils as part of an Aromatherapy treatment, it is important to understand the effect that the oil(s) have, and how it works.

Essential oils are not fatty oils at all. They evaporate easily (so remember to keep the bottle tightly closed) and they are light sensitive. Bottles should be made from brown glass. Some oils are very light in colour (lavender, mint) and others are quite dark (patchouli and sandalwood). Bergamot is a light green in colour!

When chosing your oil check the purity of the product. Is the oil a blend? Pre-blended oils often mix an expensive oil with a less expensive one. This changes and reduces the healing capability of the product. If you are using the oil for healing, only use the best!

How essential Oils and Aromapathy works

Essential oils have an immediate impact on our sense of smell, also known as "olfaction". When essential oils are inhaled, olfactory receptor cells are stimulated and the impulse is transmitted to the emotional center of the brain, or "limbic system".

The limbic system is connected to areas of the brain linked to memory, breathing, and blood circulation, as well as the endocrine glands which regulate hormone levels in the body. The properties of the oil, the fragrance and its effects, determine stimulation of these systems.

When used in massage, essential oils are not only inhaled, but absorbed through the skin as well. They penetrate the tissues and find their way into the bloodstream where they are transported to the organs and systems of the body.

Essential oils have differing rates of absorption, generally between 20 minutes and 2 hours, so it is probably best not to bathe or shower directly following a massage to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Plants and essential oils

A large number of plants have been used for their essential oils. Among these are -

  • Rose
  • Lavender
  • Jasmine
  • Clove
  • Sandalwood
  • Mint
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lemongrass

Apart from their medicinal properties, essential oils have also been valued for their aromas. The fragrances of rose, lavender, jasmine and sandalwood, for instance, is due to their essential oils. In aromatherapy essential oil is used.

However, caution must be exercised in the use of essential oils, as they can be strong and highly potent in action. As such, they are usually diluted with other oils, like olive oil or almond oil, for massage. Essential oils can also be combined, according to their particular properties and the cure that is to be achieved.

Safety Guidlines for Using Essential Oils
