Dandruf causes, cure & treatment

Dandruf is the single most common problem that can occur on every body. It die scalp cells coming off in flakes.

What causes dandruf ?

The causes of dandruf can be many like:-

1. Heredity
2. Lack of proper Diet
3. Environment
4. Dry or Greasy Scalp is etc.
5. Stress, anxiety and tension.
6. Infrequent shampooing of the hair or inadequate rinsing.
7. Improper use of hair-coloring products or excessive use of electric hair curlers.

What actually Dandruf is ?

Dandruf can lead to other problems, like acne or a rashy skin, and can even trigger off hair loss. Scratching the scalp, in itchy forms of dandruf, can also lead to secondary bacterial infections.

Treatment of Dandruf:

The aim of treatment is to reduce the level of the yeast pityrosporum ovale on the scalp. Dandruff responds well to the use of medicated, anti-fungal shampoos, especially those containing, in order of effectiveness:

  • Selenium sulphide
  • Zinc pyrithione
  • Coal tar
  • Ketoconazole

The shampoo should be massaged into the scalp and left on for 3-5 minutes before being thoroughly rinsed. The hair and scalp should be shampooed with this type of shampoo 1-2 times a week.

Dandruff should improve within 1-2 weeks of starting treatment, but will commonly recur if treatment is stopped.

Your Comb/ Brush and dandruf:

Never use the brush or comb of the person suffering from dandruff as it is dangerous and contagious. Likewise, make sure that you wash your comb/brush after every shampoo if you have dandruf yourself!

Many medicines, medicated soaps and shampoos are available to counter dandruf, but the most effective is cleanliness of hair. Brush your hair thrice a day and shampoo at least once a week. While washing your hair, take care the water does not trickle down your face. There are chances that you may get pimples.

NOTE: 1.when people see the dandruf flakes, they generally assume that they have a dry-scalp condition. Dandruf, however, is more commonly due to oiliness of the scalp.

2. When scaling of the scalp is accompanied by redness and greasy scaling on the face, eyebrows and eyelashes, a person may have something other than dandruff. You should contact your doctor if the redness is present, or if scaling occurs on parts of the body other than the scalp.

Some easy home remedies for controlling dandruf:

1. Oil your hair with pure warm coconut oil and apply juice of half a lemon onto the scalp.

2. Mix a spoonful of lemon juice with two spoonfuls of vinegar and massage on the scalp. Wash your hair with an egg shampoo after this.
