Chapped Lip - chronic chapped lip, cure for severely chapped lip

What is chapped lip and what are the causes of chapped lips ?

Chapped lips are a common cold-weather problem resulting in dry, red, peeling, and cracked lips that can become inflamed and tender. Some individuals have a genetic predisposition to dry skin, which worsens as they age. The common causes for the problem of chapped lips are as follows:

  • Excessive and prolonged exposure to sun and cold, dry weather
  • Allergic reactions to cosmetics or skin care products
  • Allergic reactions to your toothpaste
  • Lip biting
  • Smoking
  • Nutritional deficiencies, such as those of B-complex Vitamins and iron.
  • Dehydration.

Cure and Treatment for chronic Chapped Lips

Chapped lips are, of course, the result of our lips being too dry. Dry lips are caused by frequent lip licking especially in cold weather. Since lips don't have oil glands, licking them - evaporates the saliva on your lips and the result is un-moistured, dry and chapped lips. Here are some measures and tips you can follow for smooth and soft lips.

Home Remedy for chapped lips cure

Here's how you can cure chapped lip:

1) Apply lip balm or petroleum jelly. You can also try coating your lips with skin moisturizer, vitamin E oil or aloe vera gel.

2) Lips are susceptible to sunburn since they lack melanin, the pigment that helps shield skin from the sun. Apply a layer of a sun-block lip balm.

3) Treat chapped lips with beeswax and phenol (such as Carmex).

4) Stay hydrated by drinking eight to ten glasses of pure water daily.

5) Once a week exfoliate your lips. Wet a soft toothbrush and gently brush your lips with a circular motion.

6) Instead of using drying matte lipsticks, use a creamy one, it helps to soothe lips that are already chapped.

7) Try to keep the air in your home humid because dry indoor air can sap the moisture from your lips.

8) Make a habit of drinking additional fluids in winter weather.

9) Avoid over exposure to sun and use a lip balm containing sun-block when going outside.

10) Use mediated balm containing camphor, menthol and phenol for already chapped lips.
