Gonorrhoea - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Gonorrhea is most common transmitted diseases and caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The disease most frequently affects 15-25-year-olds, although the number of cases has fallen in recent years. Gonorrhoea is mainly transmitted through contact. However, mothers infected with gonorrhoea can also transfer the disease to their children during delivery. Gonorrhoea (Gonorrhea) can also affect the eyes. Gonococcal conjunctivitis is an infection of the thin, transparent conjunctiva (skin) covering the eye and inner eyelids. The first place this bacterium infects is usually the columnar epithelium of the urethra and endocervix . Non-genital sites in which it thrives are in the rectum , the oropharynx and the conjunctivae of the eyes. Infected women also can pass gonorrhea to their newborn infants during delivery, causing eye infections ( conjunctivitis ) in their babies (which if left untreated, can cause blindness).

Gonorrhea among females can also be transmitted from one individual to another via contact to surfaces that may still be damp from prior contact. The incubation period varies from two to 14 days with most symptoms occurring between days 2 and 5 after being infected from an infected partner. A small number of people may be asymptomatic for up to a year. Between 30–60% of women with gonorrhea are asymptomatic or have subclinical disease.

Rectal gonorrhea (gonococcal proctitis) may affect both men and women and is often asymptomatic. Lack of specific signs and symptoms means gonorrhoea may go undetected for longer in women. There is a higher prevalence of gonorrhoea in large metropolitan areas, inner city areas, populations with lower overall levels of education and people with a lower socioeconomic status.

Irritation and/or discharge from the anus. Inflammation of the testicles and prostate gland and sore throat. It occurs mostly in infants infected during birth, but adult infection can occur can occur via the fingers of either the individual or her or his partner. Treatment of gonorrhoea involves antibiotics (penicillin) usually given in a high, single dose by injection. A drug called probenecid can also be given prior to the injection to prolong the action of penicillin – other drugs are available if you are allergic to penicillin. Oral medications are also available.

This is to cover possible coexisting chlamydial infection. More serious infections may require longer or intravenous treatment.
