Ingrown Toe Nail Information

What is Ingrown Toe Nail ?

In Ingrown Toe Nail, the skin around the toenail may become red and infected. The great toe is usually affected, but any toenail can become ingrown. The condition may become serious in people.

Ingrown toe nails are a common, painful condition that occur when skin on one or both sides of a nail grows over the edges of the nail, or when the nail itself grows into the skin. Irritation, redness, an uncomfortable sensation of warmth, as well as swelling can result from an ingrown toenail.

What causes Ingrown Toe Nail ?

Some known causes of Ingrown Toe Nail are as follows -

  • curved toenails
  • poorly fitting shoes
  • toenails that are trimmed improperly
  • Abnormally shaped nail plate
  • Trauma to the nail plate or toe

Ingrown Toe Nail Symptoms

  • Pain along the margin(s) of the toenail
  • Aggravated by wearing shoes, particularly those with narrow toes.
  • May be sensitive to any pressure, even the weight of the bed clothes.
  • There may be signs of infection.
  • There may be drainage of pus, or a watery discharge tinged with blood.

Ingrown Toe Nail Treatment

Ingrown toenails should be treated as soon as they are recognized. In many cases, people with uninfected ingrown toenails can obtain relief with the following simple regimen:

  • Soak the feet in warm salt water
  • Dry them thoroughly with a clean towel
  • Avoid tight fitting foot wear
  • If discomfort develops try soaking the foot in a basin of warm water two or three times a day.
  • Apply a mild antiseptic solution to the area
    Bandage the toe

Ingrown Toenail Home Remedy

Certain remedies have been found highly beneficial in the treatment of Ingrown Toe Nail .

Wear shoes that fit properly. Shoes that place excessive pressure on your toes or pinch your toes may cause your nails to grow into surrounding tissue. If you have nerve impairment to your feet, you may not be able to sense if your shoes fit too tightly. Take care to buy and wear properly fitted shoes, preferably from a shoe store specializing in fitting shoes for people with foot problems.
Trim your toenails straight across. Don't curve your nails to match the shape of the front of your toe. See a podiatrist every three months to have your nails professionally treated if you have circulation problems in your feet.
Keep toenails at a moderate length. Trim toenails so they are even with the tip of your toes. If you trim your toenails too short, the pressure from your shoes on your toes' tissue may direct your nails to grow into the tissue.
Wear protective footwear. If your work puts you at risk of injuring your toes, buy footwear, such as steel-toed shoes, that protects your toes.
