Uses of Essential Oils

How Essential Oils are used? What are the benefits of essential oils?

The use of essential oils to care for the body and to bring about cures is known as Aromatherapy. The term "essential oil" is actually a misnomer, because it is not really an oil, like olive, coconut or almond oil. An essential oil is very complex in nature. It is the volatile and aromatic part of the plant.

According to Marguerite Maury, a great aromatherapist, essential oils are "the purest form of living energy that we can insert into man."

Esential oils are used in many mays -

Body and Facial Oils

These can be used on a daily basis to nourish the skin. Use a one percent blend of essential oil to carrier oil for the face and a three percent blend for the body.

Pot Pourri

Add a few drops of an appropriate oil tp refresh old pot pourri, or make your own.

Clean the air in home:

Essential oils are used to clean the air rather than mask smells in the home. To rid a room of stale tobacco or cooking smells use cinnamon, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, orange, tea tree, rosemary or lime for their ability to freshen and cleanse the air of stagnant smells throughout the house.

Perfumes

The finest perfumes are traditionally blended from pure essetial oils, particularly the flower extracts, though these days synthetic aromas tend to be used, particularly for the cheaper perfumes. The art of perfumier is subtle and skilled, and difficult to emulate at home as it is hard to find a medium to use as a substitute for alcohol. If you have a favorite oil or blend of essences, you can use it all over in a body oil (three percent solution); ore make a very concentrated blend (twenty-five percent) to dab behind ears and knees and on wrists and temples.

Massage

Aromatherapy massage has been found to be the most effective way of using the essential oils. For the purposes of massage the oils are blended in a base oil.

Bath or Shower

Add 2-3 drops of essential oil to an unscented shower gel.  Be sure to disperse evenly to prevent the stronger oils from stinging sensitive areas.  The same technique can be used with your favorite shampoo to add conditioning benefits.

Foot and hand baths

Place 8-10 drops of essential oil in a bowl of warm water and bathe the hands or feet for 10-15 minutes.
Make up a blend with the same essence(s) and after drying the area massage the oil in to complete the treatment.

Direct Inhalation

Put several drops on a tissue or handkerchief and inhale. This method offers a very fast absorption into your system and the benefits can be seen almost immediately.

Humidifier/Vaporizer

Essential oils like peppermint, lemon or frankincense make ideal additions to humidifiers or vaporizers.  While heavy aromas tend to last longer, citrus and floral scents can also be used to enhance a room.

Compresses

Follow first aid instructions for the use of compresses. If a compress pad is not available disperse 1 - 2 drops of essential oil into the water. Use a large, clean, white handkerchief folded in eight. The material should be gently laid on the surface of the water to attract a film of essential oil. The compress can then be placed on the affected area in the normal way. This is particularly good for young children and babies when teething.
